您好，我是北京大学地球与空间科学学院副教授雷军，2007 级本科新生王虹（学号 00712086）的大一班主任。
应王虹同学请求，我撰写此信，推荐她申请贵校数学硕士项目。
首先我需要坦诚说明：
我的研究方向为地球物理、地震学，并非纯数学专业，因此我无法专业评判她高阶数学科研能力，这部分评价将由她数学学院的授课老师完整出具。
我能客观陈述的，是我亲眼见证、朝夕相处一年里，她身上独有的品格、韧性与对数学极致的热忱。

I am Lei Jun, Associate Professor, School of Earth and Space Sciences, Peking University. I served as the freshman class advisor for Wang Hong (Student ID: 00712086) in 2007, and I write this letter at her request to support her application for your master’s program in mathematics.
I must state clearly at the beginning that my research field is geophysics and seismology, not pure mathematics. I cannot professionally evaluate her advanced mathematical research capacity; that judgment will be fully provided by her mathematics professors from the School of Mathematical Sciences. What I can testify to is her personality, perseverance and extraordinary passion for mathematics I witnessed over her first year at Peking University.
Wang Hong was admitted to our geophysics major at age 16 with outstanding college entrance exam scores. Within weeks of enrollment, she came to me and said she was determined to transfer to the School of Mathematical Sciences. Her father is a math teacher, and she had devoured advanced mathematics books since childhood; her family even hid math books to encourage her to read more widely, yet her obsession never faded.
At that time, Peking University had strict transfer rules: students needed top 20% grades in their original major and complete core math courses to switch departments. Most students with transfer wishes gave up halfway due to heavy double-course workload, but Wang Hong persisted. I coordinated with the school academic affairs office and the mathematics school to arrange her simultaneous enrollment in Mathematical Analysis, Advanced Algebra and Geometry. For one full year, she balanced two sets of heavy coursework without slacking off, and successfully transferred to the mathematics department the next year.
I watched her endure tremendous academic pressure without complaint. She taught herself extra math knowledge in spare time, stayed late in libraries every day, and never hesitated to seek advice from math teachers across departments. Her self-discipline, resilience and pure love for mathematics are extremely rare among undergraduates.
Though I cannot judge her professional mathematical talent, I firmly believe her willpower and learning ability will carry her through any tough academic challenges in France. She possesses the grit to tackle long-term difficult mathematical research.
